This week I’m turning it around a bit and sharing a What DOESN’T Work for Me tip.
The whole “On a scale of 1 to 10….” thing just doesn’t do it for me.
I mean, come on. Could we have a more subjective scale? “How’s the pain on a scale of 1 to 10?”. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT a “10″ PAIN FEELS LIKE? I mean, are we talking a 10 is childbirth or being tortured Jack Bauer style? I haven’t experienced either of those things, so I can’t even compare to them, but yeah, I’m gonna say that my smashed finger is probably not a 10 then. But what is it?

Oh yes, this definitely clears it up, let me just glance at my face in the mirror and compare it to these faces. Yep – mouth in a straight line, big eyes, slightly arched eyebrows…must be a 4.
Oh wait, you mean that the only time I cry is when I’m at a level 10 pain…I must be at level 10 pretty often then. I cry when I get my finger stuck in the baby wipe container, for Pete’s sake.
This chart is even better…I like how we jump from “interferes with basic needs” straight to “bed rest required” – is there no in between?
And that doesn’t have to just have to apply to pain…I don’t like scales of 1 to 10, not matter what they refer to.
So don’t ask me how I am/think/feel/etc. on a scale of 1 to 10 cause I just might punch you and then ask how you feel on a scale of 1 to 10…
