I had quite a few funny kid things happen during the bookfair that I have to share (or at least document for my own memory down the road…).
One kid, while walking out of the library, got so distracted by the little toys and trinkets I had on display to her left that she walked smack dab into that pole in the middle of my door, bounced off it, and fell backward on the floor. Of course I checked to make sure she was ok, but inside I was absolutely cracking up. It was hilarious and I sure wish I had it on video!
One child came in with four quarters. I showed him the section of things he could buy for one dollar. Our conversation went something along the lines of:
Me: You have four quarters, which equals one dollar, so you can buy this, this, or this.
Student: I have four dollars.
Me: No, only one dollar.
Student: I want to buy this (holds up $4.00 item)
Me: That is four dollars, and you only have one so you can’t buy that.
Student: No! I have four dollars! Four QuarterDollars! See?
(shows me the coin where indeed it says Quarter Dollar on the bottom)
I totally get it – he thought they were called Quarter Dollars and were each worth a dollar but the shape of a quarter…he didn’t quite get the concept of it being 1/4 of a dollar.
Multiple times it was obvious that the some of the kids have very little money sense. Often a kid would bring up several books and then hand me something like $0.17 – they have no idea that they can’t buy a book with that. I also had a few conversations that went like this:
Me: That will be $4.00.
Student (with panicked look): But I only have $5.00!
The bookfair ended Thursday and at the end of the day I had the principal make a “last call” announcement for the teachers who wanted to come by after school. Right after the announcement a kid comes running into the library:
Student: Does this mean all the leftover books are free??
He wasn’t the only one, several others asked on Friday if the rest of the books were free, or were just concerned about what happens to the leftover books in general. So funny.
