I remember years ago when I heard someone say that popcorn was healthy and I was like “What?! No way, popcorn is so junky!” but that’s because I’d only ever had the microwave popcorn stuff covered in fake butter. I really had no idea that you could make popcorn yourself in a way that is healthy and still delicious!
Now popcorn is one of my favorite snacks and just as easy to make as the prepackaged microwave versions!

Ok so first of all, I know there are a lot of people in the natural/crunchy community who have kicked their microwaves to the curb. I’m not there yet soooooo yes, this is a microwave popcorn recipe. Don’t throw things at me. But if you’re anti-microwave yourself you can also make this with the stovetop popper or air popper thingys so this totally still applies to you!
For those who are still microwave users, this is how I do it. I use a brown paper lunch bag and pour my popcorn kernels into the bag (I use a food scale and usually do about 1.5 ounces, that is plenty without overflowing the bag). My microwave has a popcorn button so I fold the top of the bag down a couple of times (it’ll partially unroll and that’s fine, I’ve never had popcorn escape), stick it in, and hit the popcorn button. Somehow my microwave magically pops it for the right amount of time without ever burning. Fascinating. But if you don’t have that feature on yours, you’ll have to play around with the timing and listen carefully to make sure you grab it out when the popping slows down.Once it’s done I dump it into a bowl and start flavoring.Because I follow the Trim Healthy Mama eating plan, where we separate our carbs from our fats, I don’t melt butter and pour it on your popcorn. You totally can if you’re not a THMer and it’s super good that way too, but this is another yummy, lower fat option. I use this 100% pure avocado oil spray – it’s what I use as my cooking spray but it also works great for popcorn! It doesn’t have any additives like most cooking sprays, it’s just avocado oil, so I lightly mist my popcorn with it. It gives it enough so that my seasonings stick to the popcorn but doesn’t add a significant amount of fat.I spray a spritz of avocado oil spray, a couple of twists of mineral salt, and a couple of shakes of JuvaSpice. JuvaSpice is a super yummy spice that Young Living sells that is not only delicious but also designed to support your liver and digestion so you’re getting some extra health benefits!
I do the spray + salt + JuvaSpice and then toss my popcorn and repeat, I do that a couple of times until I’ve hit pretty much all of the kernels.
If you don’t have JuvaSpice you can just do salt, salt and pepper (Michael’s favorite), add nutritional yeast (a popular Trim Healthy Mama popcorn flavoring), or try some other favorite seasonings like ranch-inspired spices, cinnamon, etc.
Yum yum!!
How do you like to season/top your popcorn?
