A couple of months ago when I reached a new rank in Young Living one of my amazing upline leaders sent me a gift card to Stitch Fix. I sat on that gift card for a long time because I was still working hard to lose weight and so hadn’t been buying myself much of anything while I was in that in between stage.
Then I got pregnant and not only needed new clothes but also needed some business casual clothes for our upcoming convention, so I decided the time had come to give Stitch Fix a whirl! Here’s my review of my first experience and what they sent.

What is Stitch Fix?
Stitch Fix is a clothing subscription box service. You set up how often you would like to receive a box, answer questions about your sizing and style preferences, and one of their stylist handpicks several items to send you. You have no idea what is coming so it’s a surprise when the box arrives! You try on the items and decide which (if any) you want to keep and which (if any) you want to send back.
It’s a fantastic way to update your wardrobe if you’re not a huge fan of getting out in the stores to shop. It’s also a fun way to try new clothes and styles. Plus the items are good brands and great quality.
The Stitch Fix ordering process
I had no idea what to expect as I’ve never used Stitch Fix or any other clothing subscription box. When you create your Stitch Fix account they ask you a TON of questions! It’s very thorough! Obvious things like your clothing sizes of course but also things like your due date (if you’ve marked that you’re pregnant), if you like clothes to fit loose or tight, what type of necklines you like, if there are colors you want to avoid, what your overall style is, what pieces of clothing you’d prefer to receive. There is even a place where you can link a board on Pinterest so if you’re like me and you have a much better wardrobe on your Pinterest board than you do in real life you can use that to show what things you are drawn too.
Stitch Fix also has a Pinterest account with lots of outfit examples so you can look through that and use those to give suggestions of what you like too.
There’s a place at the end where you can write notes to your stylist (the person who will be picking out your clothes). That’s where I specified that I really needed some business casual maternity clothes for an event about a month away.
After you submit your order then you wait. It said my Fix would be there in a week but it actually came a couple of days early so that was exciting!
What Stitch Fix sent me
Man I was SO excited when that box showed up on my doorstep! I have never ordered blind like this before and couldn’t wait to see what they had sent.
They sent five pieces: two shirts, a pair of black pants, a dress, and a necklace.
I tried them all on right away and was immediately impressed with the quality! I usually buy pretty cheapo clothes for myself and there was an obvious difference – could tell these were much better quality fabrics than what I usually get. I wasn’t totally sure about the sizing – some of the pieces felt a bit large but at the same time, I was only 17 weeks pregnant and knew I’d need some room to grow in to them so maybe a bit big was a good thing.
After trying them on twice and looking them over myself I went to some people with much better fashion sense than me…my Facebook friends, obviously! Seriously though, I am not the best judge of what looks good on me and what doesn’t and I wanted some help deciding what to keep.
I had Michael take some pictures of each of the pieces and asked my friends for some feedback. I got a lot of comments and thoughts from everyone!
The pink shirt and black pants combo was a huge hit and the overwhelming favorite. A lot of people loved the dress too. The printed top wasn’t nearly as popular (even though that was my initial favorite), I think because it definitely wasn’t as slimming.
What I thought about my Stitch Fix pieces
Printed shirt: This was my immediate favorite as soon as I put it on. In pictures I could see that it definitely accentuated my overly large chest (much more so than the pink shirt) and wasn’t quite as figure flattering, but I loved it in person so this was a definite keeper.
Pink shirt: At first I didn’t like it. It was very loose (I mean, I know it’s maternity but it still felt kind of big) and also sleeveless which is not my favorite. However, once I had Michael take my pictures I could see it was very flattering and like I said my friends really, really loved it.
Black pants: I loved these too! Incredibly comfortable while still looking very professional. They felt like leggings but were not at all tight or clingy like leggings. They did feel a little big – they were kind of loose around the knees and also a bit long for wearing flats.
Dress: My least favorite of all the pieces. It was a little shorter than I usually wear and am comfortable in, the print was not my style, the neckline is not one I would have picked for myself, and it was sleeveless which again, is not my preference. Like I said before though, my friends all loved it.
Necklace: Very pretty, classic and simple which I like. However, I need clothes much more than I need jewelry right now so I wasn’t quite as jazzed about it as I was the clothes.
What I kept, exchanged, and returned
When you get your Stitch Fix box you have three days to decide what to keep. At the end of those three days you either keep it all or you mail back what you don’t want.
If you choose to keep everything, you get a 25% discount on the total of the whole box.
I debated and debated. Money-wise, keeping everything made the most sense because even if I sent some of it back I’d be missing out on the 25% whole-box discount and therefore not saving very much money. But even though my friends loved the dress, it just wasn’t my style and was too short for what I’m currently comfortable in during this phase of wrangling a four- and two-year-old.
So I decided to skip out on the 25% discount and send back some of the pieces then try another box later to see what other fun stuff they send!
I ended up keeping both of the tops, exchanging the pants for a smaller size (I didn’t realize at first that was an option but I was so glad that it was because I really loved those pants just wished they were smaller!), and returning the dress and necklace.
When you check out you are asked to give feedback on each of the pieces as far as fit, how much you liked it, etc. so that they can improve on picking for you.
Ongoing shipments
When you set up your account you select if you want to get boxes every 2-3 weeks, every month, every couple of months, etc. I picked every month so once I had completed my first order (let them know what I was keeping and what I was sending back) I got an email that my next box had been scheduled for the next month. However, I really wanted to get some more clothes before we left for Convention next month so I logged into my account and changed my date so that I’d get my next box the following week – so apparently you can get your boxes much closer together if you want!
I definitely wouldn’t get boxes that close together normally, but since I’m wanting to get clothes before a specific event I went ahead and did it.
