40+ FUN handwriting copywork prompts for extra practice

One of the skills I want my 7 year old to practice this summer is handwriting. Unless I specify that he has to write in cursive for his school work he always defaults to writing in all printed uppercase letters, which is fine but I want him to get some practice writing in cursive as well as in print with both upper and lowercase letters. To help him with that he will be doing a little bit of copywork every day this summer but I wanted to make it fun and interesting so I came up with a bunch of fun handwriting copywork prompts that are tailored to him and his interests.

For some of the prompts I’ve given him lists to copy (days of the week, months of the year, the full names of everyone in our family) but most of the prompts require him to go hunt for the item/phrase/list and then copy it – almost like a scavenger hunt. He LOVES scavenger hunts and has been having a lot of fun with this. Some of those examples are looking up a Bible verse and copying it, finding a fact in a book we have, listing ingredients from a well-loved recipe, etc.

I made this list of prompts into a checklist and printed it out for him so that each day he can complete the prompt and check it off. There are enough on there to cover him for most of the summer. This is a very hands off (for me) activity that he is able do pretty much on his own – I’m having a baby in a few weeks so I wanted to make sure his summer school activities were things he could do pretty autonomously!

While I can’t just give you my document that has all the prompts since it contains personal information as well as a lot of things that are specific to us (books at our house, my son’s interests, etc.), I did type up a bunch of them here so you can take this idea list and run with it yourself.

We use Logic of English as our language arts curriculum (including handwriting) so I printed off the free LOE lined paper and turned those into a little workbook but you could use whatever size or type paper your child prefers!
