Is it June and I’m sitting here looking at 4th of July decorations on my mantle? Yes. But am I still going to make a post about Christmas? Also yes. Because I never blogged about our quilted Christmas stockings and I super love them so they need a post of their own. Hey, only six more months until Christmas so I’m just getting an early start ;)
I’ve wanted to sew/quilt stockings for our family since before I even had kids (so, at least 10 years ago) but with babies and other responsibilities and life I hadn’t gotten around to it. I did start a set several years ago but hated the fabric (the same fabric that I ended up using for this tree skirt, actually) so I never finished them.
It wasn’t really a big deal though, at our old house we didn’t have a mantle or anywere to display them through the Christmas season so we only pulled stockings out on Christmas Eve and I didn’t care (too much) that they were mismatched ones from Target. But our new house has a gorgous fireplace and mantle so I knew this year I had to get those stockings made.
It took me until Christmas Eve morning to get them finished but I *did* get them finished in time. And I am so incredibly in love with how they turned out!
Each person in the family has a different color (we let the 3 big kids pick theirs – they thought that was cool). Eventually I want to get our names either embroidered on them or do a cute hanging tag with our initials but for now since they’re different colors we can still tell them apart so it’s fine.
Details:
I used this free Christmas stocking pattern for the structure (shape, lining, size) but adapted the design from the Shine quilt pattern to make the the wonky stripes. The stocking pattern I followed used ribbon for the hook to hang it and I wanted to use fabric instead so I followed the instructions in this tutorial. Using the Shine quilt stripes was inspired by a picture I saw on Instagram.
The fabric is a variety of colors from the Moda Thatched collection and hand quilted with Aurifil 12wt thread.
I made both sides with the wonky stripes so they’re reversable and look good from any direction. The lining is also the Moda Thatched fabric in one of the primary colors of each stocking.
You've heard what I have to say...now I want to hear your thoughts!
