all about Savvy Minerals makeup by Young Living

I got into Young Living when I was pregnant with my first baby because my pregnancy really shifted my worldview and caused me to reevaluate the toxic items we used in our homes.  I went looking for a more natural way to clean around the house and in my search discovered Young Living essential oils!

Since that point I worked to replace my deodorant, soap, shampoo, lotion, supplements, skincare, and more using the amazing options that YL provides, however, I kept using my toxic makeup, even though I KNEW it was horrible (in fact, I almost never wore lipstick anymore after my kids were born because I hated the idea of kissing them and getting nasty chemical lipstick on them) because I just didn’t know what, if any, natural options were out there and the effort required to find them seemed daunting.  If you’ve been a long time reader you know that about a year ago I did some research, found a natural brand, finally threw out all of my old makeup, and replaced it.

So needless to say, I was THRILLED when Young Living announced that they were now offering makeup because:

1) I know the company and their commitment to quality so I knew it was going to be a super high quality, well researched and tested product

2) I’m a green personality and researcher at heart and if even *I* was overwhelmed at the idea of figuring out what companies had natural makeup products and which didn’t, I knew that the majority of people would be suuuuuper overwhelmed so having a product from a company we trust is awesome.

3) I’m all about a one-stop-shop and now that I’ll be able to buy my makeup from a company I already order from (and earn all sorts of free stuff back…thank you Essential Rewards program!), that’s just icing on the cake ;)

This post contains affiliate links.  I am a Young Living independent distributor so if you purchase a product through my link I make a commission at no cost to you.  You become part of my Oily Moments community and we will be here to help you with your new oils.  Thanks for joining with me!

savvy minerals by Young Living makeup

Why does what’s in my makeup matter?

There are some seriously nasty ingredients that are, unfortunately, SUPER common in most cosmetics you’ll find on the market.  Check out a few of them and why they’re so icky.

– parabens: estrogen disruptors that are linked to breast cancer and reproductive issues

– “fragrance”: cosmetic and personal care manufacturers do not have to disclose what they put in their products for fragrance, as that is considered a trade secret, so when you see the word “fragrance” on a product it can be (and most likely is) a variety of synthetic chemical fragrances

– talc: linked to ovarian and lung cancer

– bismuth: a heavy metal that chemically resembles arsenic and can cause irritation and acne, very commonly found in mineral makeup

– phthalates: endocrine disruptors linked to developmental and reproductive toxicity as well as cancer, asthma, ADHD, and male fertility issues; classified as a “probable human carcinogen” by the EPA

– petrochemicals: chemical products derived from petroleum that are linked to anemia, kidney degeneration, and nerve damage to the brain and spinal cord

– nanoparticles: teeny, tiny particles that are small enough to cross through the skin and into the bloodstream where they can cause DNA and cell function damage, brain damage, and liver damage

And guess what…while these things might be common in cosmetics from other companies, NONE of these are found in our Savvy Minerals makeup!

What’s NOT in Savvy Minerals Makeup?

Savvy Minerals by Young Living contains no:
– tac
– bismuth
– parabens
– petrochemicals/mineral oil
– nanoparticles
– phthalates
– synthetic colors or dyes
– synthetic fragrances
– gluten

Maybe you’re not a science girl nerd like me and don’t want to look up the long scientific name of every single ingredient in your current makeup or personal care products to see if they have these ingredients. Guess what…you don’t have to!

There is a really great app called “Think Dirty”.  If you don’t have that on your phone, download it now! (apple / android)Think Dirty app

You can scan the barcode of products you use to see how they rate, of if you aren’t near them to scan you can use the search feature and search for them.

You can also check the EWG’s Skin Deep database on their website.  I don’t think EWG/Skin Deep and Think Dirty are the same company, but they basically tell you the same thing and rate each product with a toxicity score between 1 (low) and 10 (high).

If you have a product that is not found in the databases (like our new Savvy Minerals makeup), you can look up each individual ingredient in the Skin Deep database – that’s what I did to research for this post.

Ditch the toxic makeup

So…what do we do now?  Obviously, we don’t want to keep using that super toxic makeup on our face, right?

Good news…we have the Savvy Minerals line that contains (almost) everything you need to start fresh with a base collection of makeup!  And one of the cool things about using mineral makeup is that it is very buildable, so you can use the same makeup shades and achieve a soft, subtle look or a dramatic, darker look, just depending on your preference.

Right now we have:
– foundation
– blush
– bronzer
– veil (setting powder)
– eyeshadow
– eyeliner
– brow filler
– lipstick
– lip glossSavvy Minerals by Young Living

The only thing missing from what I’d consider all your ‘essentials’ is mascara…and that’s supposed to be coming in August!!  Yay!

They will also be releasing more items and more colors throughout the next year to add even more variety to choose from.

Savvy Minerals by Young Living Mineral Veil

Also called Diamond Dust, the mineral veil is a finishing powder designed to be applied at the end of your makeup routine. Again, all of these products score a 1 or 2 on the EWG database (see the ingredient descriptions above)

When I was at the expo at convention I thought the Diamond Dust veil looked super, super sparkly so I didn’t buy any for fear of my face looking like fairy dust got me, but after using a friend’s in person, it looks very natural and not fairy dust-like at all!  I’ll be purchasing myself some now!

Savvy Minerals by Young Living Tutorials

To be honest, I’m not much of a makeup guru so you aren’t going to get many tutorials from me.  I wear makeup and I like makeup but I use the same products every day, in as fast a manner as possible, and I don’t know any cool tips or tricks.

However, I’ve got some really great resources for you from people who actually know what they’re doing!

There are two great Facebook groups I recommend:
– Inside Out – Natural, Savvy Beauty
– Savvy Mineral Makeup :: Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials

Both of these groups are chock full of information, including:
– FAQs
– tips on how to find the right color for you
– how to make tinted moisturizer
– how to apply eye liner
– before and after pictures
– hacks for mixing foundations, using various products as concealers, highlighters
– how to make darker lip color
– tips for healthier skin
– and SOOOOO much more!  I highly, HIGHLY recommend you click both of those links and request to join, especially if you’re like me and need a little help knowing what to actually do with your makeup.

There are also some tutorial videos done by Melissa Poepping herself here and she has a Facebook page you can follow here.

My Savvy Minerals makeup routine

Here’s a picture from my first time using it right after I got it at convention and list what I’ve been using.

– foundation: Warm #1 and misting spray
– blush: Smashing
– bronzer: Crowned all Over
– eyeshadow: Best Kept Secret, Spoiled, and Determined
– eyeliner: Jet Setter
– lipstick: On a Whim
– lip gloss: Embrace
– mascara: my ownSavvy Minerals by Young Living natural look

Since then I’ve also done a video tutorial of my routine.

Getting started with Savvy Minerals makeup

For current members, I recommend looking at what you already use on a daily basis and then replacing that with similar Savvy Minerals products.

  • “Minimalist” makeup starter kit
    – foundation
    – misting spray
    – blush
    – one eyeshadow
    – multitasker (can double as eyeliner and a second eyeshadow)
    – lip gloss

TOTAL: $150

  • “Full face” makeup kit
    – foundation
    – misting spray
    – veil
    – blush
    – bronzer
    – 2 – 3 eyeshadows
    – eyeliner or multitasker
    – lipstick

  • “I want it all” makeup kit
Assuming everything is in stock (including the brushes) you can buy every single piece of the makeup

TOTAL: $1,002

If you are NOT a Young Living member yet, you can become a member with the makeup starter kit.  That’ll get you a makeup makeover and a wholesale membership with Young Living so you can continue getting makeup, essential oils, personal care products, cleaning products, supplements, and more at the wholesale price.  Woo hoo!

If you don’t already have a friend who’s been talking to you about Young Living, I’d love to help you get started!

So WHY would someone want to buy that “I want it all” makeup kit you talked about?

Well, natural, non-toxic, clean products are a hugely hot topic right now.  No longer are only “crunchy”, hippie people interested, but many many people are waking up to what they’ve been putting on and in their bodies and are looking for a better option!

As most of you know, many Young Living members choose to do the business side of things (and many don’t – it’s totally optional, which is so nice!) so if makeup is your thing, now you totally have the option to do the Young Living business and either incorporate the makeup or focus solely on the makeup if that’s what you like most.

Getting all the products would be an investment up front but would allow you to easily color match people and have all the products for people to try at a makeup party.Young Living income disclosure 2016 average salaries

You can see the most recent income disclosure here to show the earning potential through Young Living – mind blowing, isn’t it?!  I don’t know about you, but there are a LOT of ways I can think of to use a Royal Crown Diamond monthly paycheck to help people!

I am loving your website and Savvy Mineral makeup! I just wanted to let you know that I have also started a Facebook group for Savvy. Mine is geared specifically for Women of Color! When I first tried the makeup I was disappointed and there was no information to help. Since I was already invested, I embarked on a course of trial and error until I figured some things out that aren’t addressed in the other groups. I’d love for you to come check it out. Maybe you can add my group to your list!
