It’s been birthdays galore around here – Hudson turned five in January and Parker turned three in February! We typically do a joint party for them since their birthdays are so close. Because they are both super into dinosaurs right now we went with a dinosaur birthday party theme.

Invitations
I actually did not do a dinosaur theme for the invitations and went with a generic design (free download here) and edited in Picmonkey.
Decorations
We had their actual birthday party at a local party place so we only needed a handful of decorations to take with us but we had family over to the house after to eat supper that night so we went ahead and did a few decorations at the house too (plus I knew the kids would love helping me decorate). If your kids are already into dinosaurs you’ll probably have plenty of toys you can use as built-in decorations!
I used mostly what we had around the house and just grabbed a few extra things that I found at Hobby Lobby.
Toy dinosaurs wearing tiny party hats (and holding tiny balloons!) made for perfect mantle decor.
I have a pretty big stash of balloons and streamers from past parties so I pulled from that and put them up around the house too.
All the wall hangings that say “rawr” or have dinosaurs and such were found at Hobby Lobby.
We kept it simple but fun – the boys had so much fun helping me decide where to hang everything!
Cake
This is both my favorite part and the most stressful part of birthday parties! I love getting to use my cake making skills but it does always stress me out a little.
Anyway, of course I had to make a dinosaur cake!
Never in my years of cake decorating have I had a cake fall apart as badly as this one did! One of the layers broke into a ton of pieces. I glued it back together with icing and thankfully was able to salvage it without having to bake another one.
I made a two and a half layer chocolate cake (is that a thing?!). I baked two round cakes. One was the base, then the second I cut in half and stacked it to make the 2nd/3rd layer. A simple icing with chocolate icing (I have decided that every cake I made needs to be outdoor/dirt themed so I can get away with a messy chocolate icing job! Ha!), some small dinosaur toys, and some blue and green icing for grass and water and that was a wrap! Pretty easy and oh so yummy!
Food
The party was from 12:30-2:30 so we didn’t do a full meal, just some snacks to go with the cake.
You can’t really see it in this picture but the dinosaurs, which were just toys we had from the house, are holding helium balloons.
Our dinosaur snacks:
- dinosaur bones (veggie straws)
- dinosaur eggs (halo oranges)
- herbivore grub (blueberries, strawberries, and a veggie tray)
And of course the cake and candles!
Shirts
I also made shirts for the “birthdaysaurus”es. I was going to put their names and ages on the front too but Hudson wanted them to be on the back like “teamers” so that’s what we did.
Shirt details:
- Silhouette Cameo
- gray t-shirts (Hobby Lobby)
- black heat transfer vinyl
- Dinosaur font used to cut out the dinosaurs
- Whirly Birdie font used for the boys’ names and ages
This was probably the most simple party I’ve done thus far but I think they had a blast and the things I did do turned out pretty cute!
Happy 5th and 3rd birthdays, sweet boys!
