Curriculum Spine: Classical Conversations

This will be our 7th year doing Classical Converstations. My 3 oldest (11, 9, and 6 years old) will be participating in Classical Conversations Foundations.

CC Foundations touches on math, English grammar, Latin, geography, history, and science. We use this as our curriculum “spine” – we take the topics we’re learning in our CC memory work and expand on them more at home.  This year is Cycle 2 which covers topics like medieval history, world history (World Wars 1 and 2, etc.) space, earth science, and physics.

If you aren’t familiar with Classical Conversations I wrote a pretty in depth blog post about what it is, how it works, what a typical CC day looks like, and our thoughts after our first year.

More about our CC curriculum in these videos (some are from a few years ago but are still applicable for this year since the curriculum doesn’t really change):

Language Arts: Logic of English & Classical Conversations Essentials

1st grader:

My 1st grader will be in Logic of English Foundations C.    LOE covers all areas of language arts (spelling, reading, reading comprehension, handwriting).

6th and 4th graders:

My 6th and 4th graders will be doing Classical Conversations Essentials (6th grader will be in his 3rd year, 4th grader in his first year) – Essentials uses a CC-specific language arts program (Essentials of the English Language) for grammar plus IEW for writing and vocabulary. (see more about CC Essentials here)

In addition to CC Essentials they will also use Daily Grams as a quick daily practice for editing, punctuation, sentence combining, etc.

Both my 6th grader and 4th grader will be using All About Spelling for spelling instruction.  I feel like I have not yet landed on a spelling program that we love so I’m hoping this will be the one!  We’ve hopped around quite a bit and I think we need to start back at the basics with a good, solid program.  So we will be staring at level 1 with both of them and I expect they will move very quickly since the early levels are super basic and they know a lot of it from our years with Logic of English, but this way we’ll fill in any gaps that have been missed.  I have purchased levels 1-3 already and I’m guessing we’ll get through all those levels this year.

Math: RightStart Math

All the kids will be using RightStart Math for math.  My 6th grader will be in Level G, my 4th grader will be in Level E, and my 1st grader will be in Level B.  As always I still continue to use and recommend this curriculum because it gives kids such a great understanding of math and how it works.

In addition to our main curriculum we’re using a couple of math supplements this year:

One is Classical Conversations’ The Map Map.  This is a math curriculum that CC is rolling out and several of the beta levels are available for free for CC families to test out.  My oldest will be using this next year when he joins CC Challenge A so I want us to get a feel for it this year.  We used this for half of the year last year and then dropped it so I’ve started us off with a much lighter load this year so that hopefully we’ll stick with it.

My 6th grader and 4th grader will also use Beast Academy online as a supplement – Beast Academy is an advanced math curriculum that has a lot of emphasis on puzzles and problem solving.  We started this over the summer and they have really enjoyed it (and I’m very happy with the math practice that they’re doing).   I had them both start at level 1 so they got some good basic review without it being super complicated.  So far they’ve been able to do it pretty independently since they started at lower levels, at some point as they get closer to their actual math level they’ll probably need more help from me but I’m hoping that at least for now this is something they can do on their own while I work with a sibling on something else.

History: Mystery of History, Volume 1

We will be using Mystery of History, Volume 1 for our history this year.  A lot of years I try to line up our history with our CC cycle (this year is medieval) but I decided to try Mystery of History this year and instead of hopping in at Volume 2, which would line up better with CC, I decided to just start at the beginning.

We will also be using this history supplement each week to expand a bit on our CC history sentence for the week.  It’s not a full curriculum, just a few additional things about the weekly sentence.

Science: Berean Builders Science in the Ancient World

We used Berean Builders’ Science in the Beginning last year and LOVED it!  This year we’ll be using Science in the Ancient World.

Berean Builders’ science curriculum is a chronological curriculum so rather than going by subject it goes through history and talks about various topics as they fit into history.  It also talks about famous scientists who discovered those things.  There is a experiment or demonstration that goes with each lesson, which as I said normally would feel like “too much” but you can get a kit that has all the supplies in once place for you and since gathering up the supplies is half the battle, it is totally worth the money to me!

We also have a subscription to Awesome Science TV because they make fantastic videos that go along with Classical Conversations.  We use that to expand on each week’s CC sentence.

Bible: Bible Study Guide for All Ages

We have used Bible Study Guide for All Ages off and on and have really enjoyed it.  We plan to continue with it this year.  It’s a great curriculum that I can use with all the kids (hence the name ;) ) and it goes deeper into some of the lesser known Bible stories/facts.

Miscellaneous

Typing: Last year we started using the program Typesy.  My 6th and 4th grader both used it to learn the basics of typing and now will be using it to continue practicing their typing.

Piano: We have started using the Hoffman Academy videos (free on YouTube, or you can get a premium subscription here) for the kids to learn how to play piano.  I intend for them to take formal piano lessons eventually but this has been a great, low commitment, inexpensive option for them to learn some of the basics and get a feel for the piano.

I’ve linked a bunch of related videos here but I have a gazillion more on my YouTube channel – reviews of just about every curriculum we’ve used, our curriculum line ups from past years, tons of Classical Conversations videos, so check that out!
