Over the past several years I have enjoyed making Harry Potter themed meals for my family as we read through the books and then have been watching through the movies. Here are several of the Harry Potter themed meal ideas I’ve made in case you want to do the same!
I first read the books out loud to my kids – it took about 8 months to read all 7 books. Once we’d read the whole series we started watching the movies. I did a fun meal to kick off our read aloud, a meal to celebrate us finishing the whole series, and I have been doing a meal specific to each book/movie on the night that we watch that movie. We’ve also had some other Harry Potter related meals, like birthday parties. All that to say, I’ve come up with quite a few ideas over the years so I’m gathering them all in here in one place!
Please note, these are fairly simple meals that focus on matching up with the books but also are things I think my kids will eat. There are a lot of really cool, unique, and elaborate ideas but I tried to stick with things that wouldn’t be terribly hard and were pretty kid-friendly. If you’re looking for really impressive, Pinterest-worthy themed meals you will likely be disappointed but if you’re looking more for practical, simple things you can do hopefully these will be helpful!

Specific Harry Potter book ideas
On the nights we watch the Harry Potter movies for the first time I like to make a themed meal that goes with that book/movie. I try not to do generic Harry Potter foods but instead make it have something specific to do with that particular book. Here’s what I’ve come up with:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone meal
For our Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie night I tried to recreate Harry’s first meal in the Great Hall. I decorated our table like the tables in the Great Hall (black table cloth, red table cloth folded in a long rectangle, gold plates, candlesticks, and goblets).
- Chicken (we picked up some fried chicken from a restaurant)
- Gravy (I made mashed potatoes and gravy)
- Yorkshire pudding (these are kind of like popovers, I used a recipe I found here)
- Apple pie
- Pumpkin juice (recipe from here)
- Peas & carrots
- Corn on the cob

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets meal
This one was super simple: a Basilisk calzone and Mandrake cupcakes
- For the Basilisk calzone I basically just did pizza dough with sauce and cheese/toppings, rolled it up into a log, shaped it like a snake, and added pepperoni for eyes and a tongue, then baked it
- For the Mandrake cupcakes I made my standard chocolate cupcake recipe and stuck little plastic babies and spinach leaves in the top

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban meal
- Hippogriff casserole (chicken casserole)
- Flobberworms (butter noddles – the really simple ones that come in the package at the grocery store where you just add water)
- Sirius Black eyed peas
- Butterbeer (recipe from here)
- Monster Book of Monster ice cream sandwiches (mini ice cream sandwiches with icing for “hair”, chocolate chips for eyes, and a fruit leather for the tongue)
I know Butterbeer is a classic HP drink to serve but it doesn’t get mentioned in the books until the Prisoner of Azkaban so I saved it until we did this meal

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire meal
- Mad Eye Moody’s eyeballs (sausage balls)
- Asparagus wands
- Dragon’s Egg Golden Eggs (deviled eggs)
- Gillyweed salad (Caesar salad)
- Ice Cream served in goblets

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix meal
This one was hard for me to come up with ideas! I usually try to either make food that is mentioned in the book (Butterbeer, pumpkin juice, Yorkshire pudding, etc.) or I try to make the food look like/represent other things from the book (Basilisk calzone, Mad Eye Moody’s eyeballs, Mandrake cupcakes, etc.) but for Order of the Phoenix I struggled to come up with creative ideas so I also leaned on alliteration (Tonks tossed salad, Bellatrix blackberries, Occlumency Oreo pie)
- Prophecy Orbs (pizza bites – just pizza dough with cheese inside and rolled into a ball, brushed with olive oil + Italian spices, baked, and served with pizza sauce for dipping)
- Tonks tossed salad
- Bellatrix blackberries
- Occlumency Oreo pie
- Veritaserum (Veritaserum is listed as a clear liquid so I just served water with edible glitter added)

General Harry Potter ideas
Harry Potter book series kick off
The night we started reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone I didn’t do anything super elaborate because the kids had very little knowledge of anything Harry Potter yet. But I did make Sorting Hat cupcakes to “sort” them into houses.

I just used my standard chocolate cupcake recipe then once they were cooled I used the wide end of an icing tip to bore out a hole in the middle. I mixed up my standard butter cream icing recipe, divided it in fourths, dyed them red, blue, green, and yellow, then piped the colored icing into the cupcakes. Once they were filled I used more buttercream (this time I did an Oreo buttercream, but I’ve also done plain chocolate) on top to cover the hole, then added on a hat made with an Oreo and a Hershey kiss.
Harry Potter book series completion celebration
When we finished the series we celebrated with chicken pot pie (seemed like something that would have been served in the Great Hall), wands (pretzel rods dipped in chocolate), and snitches (Ferrero Roche candies with wings)
(snitch wings printable here)

Harry Potter birthday party
My oldest 2 kids chose to have a joint Harry Potter themed birthday party when they turned 11 and 9. At the party we served:
- Raven Claws (Bugles)
- Huffle Puffs (Cheetos)
- Slytherin Snakes (sour gummy worms)
- Gryffindor Grapes (grapes)
- Sorting Hat cupcakes (see above for how I make them)
- Cookies shaped like lighting bolts, ties, owls, and sorting hats (I made them using these cookie cutters)
(customizable labels for the food table came from here)

Have you hosted a Harry Potter themed party or movie night? If so, what did you serve?
